The device has a pump for extracting liquid from a tank, where the pump is driven by an electric motor i.e. direct current (DC) electric motor, and a measuring unit for measuring time lapse to measure predetermined time lapse (T1) at reception of stop control of the pump and measuring an electric quantity (Us) at terminals of the electric motor. A comparing unit compares measured the electric quantity with a threshold (Ud) defining a predetermined level of filling of the tank. A determination unit determines a level of liquid in the tank according to the comparison result. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a level of liquid in a tank of a motor vehicle.
