<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of improving brightness unevenness and a peripheral brightness ratio while avoiding increase in cost and power consumption by reducing the number of light sources. <P>SOLUTION: In a backlight unit which is used for an image display device equipped with a liquid crystal display element, and irradiates light to the liquid crystal display element from the rear face side of the liquid crystal display element, this is equipped with at least one linear light source in order to emit light, and a diffusion plate which is arranged on a light emission side of the backlight unit and diffuses light from the light source. When the distance between a light incident face of the diffusion plate and the linear light source in a direction orthogonal to the main flat face of the diffusion plate is denoted by h, and the distance between the linear light source arranged on the furthest end of the backlight unit and the end of the backlight unit when seen from the light emission side of the backlight unit is denoted by L, a condition of 3≤L/h≤8 is satisfied. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
