PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thread tension device of a sewing machine capable of stabilizing tension applied to a needle thread. SOLUTION: The thread tension device fixes a fixing section 24 regulating the movement of a second thread tension tray 23 to a front end part to a thread forming shaft part 184 of a thread tension shaft 18. A splitting groove 185 is formed along a shaft center in the thread forming shaft part 184. The inserting part 291 of the plate rod member 29 is fit into the splitting groove 185. The thread tension device can prevent the thread forming shaft part 184 from deforming even though force acts on the thread forming shaft part 184 when fixing the hex nut 241 and the hex nut 242 to the thread forming shaft part 184. The hex nut 241 and the hex nut 242 do not loosen because it is possible to prevent the thread forming shaft part 184 from deforming. Accordingly, the thread tension device can surely regulate the position of the second thread tension tray 23 and can stabilize the tension which the first thread tension tray 23 and the second thread tension tray 22 apply to the needle thread 9.
