Oral medicinal compositions comprise, in unit dosage form, the following active ingredients: bromelain, trypsin or chymotrypsin; potassium and/or calcium glutamate; theophylline, aminophylline or theobromine, or a salt thereof, or a mixture of any of these; ephedrine sulphate, pseudo - ephedrine or racephedrine; and phenobarbutal, butabarbital, mephobarbital, pentabarbital, or amobarbital. The preferred composition contains bromelain, potassium gluconate, calcium guclonate, theophylline, ephedrine sulphate and phenobarbital, and may take the form of a layered tablet, with the enzyme and both gluconates as an enterically coated core, and the remaining three ingredients as an immediately-released outer layer; the enteric coating may be shellac or cellulose acetate phthalate. Conventional excipients, carriers, and tabletting lubricants may be present. The protealytic enzyme is said to provide a potentiating effect and a prolongation of action in the compositions, which are useful for treating respiratory disease. |
