PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical seal stabilizing a sealing function by eliminating liquid pressure between components. SOLUTION: The mechanical seal 15 includes an annular casing 25 liquid-tightly retained on an inner circumference of a housing 11, and an annular sleeve 21 liquid tightly retained on an outer circumference of a shaft 12 rotatably supported by the housing 11 at an inner circumference side of the casing 25, and includes, between the sleeve 21 and the casing 25, a cup gasket 22, a mating ring 23, a seal ring 24, a packing 26, and a spring 31 for pressing to an axial one side, and defines a bearing chamber 16 and a pump chamber 17. The innermost diameter R3 which is the shortest radius of a pressure receiving part of the packing 26 where water pressure in an axial direction is received is kept not greater than an inner diameter R2 of the mating ring 23 (R3≤R2).
