Indexing means for a gear-cutting machine comprises a slotted disc 4, connected by a friction coupling or freewheel 6 to a coaxial arm 9, and a twin-armed lever 18 pivoted on the arm, one lever arm co-operating with an arm 12 carrying a lug 11 to engage a slot in the disc 4 and the other lever arm being operated by a reciprocable member 23, and the reciprocable member being connected also, with lost-motion, to the arm 9. The disc 4 is a slotted rim bolted to a hub 3. The lost-motion connection is effected by a pivot pin 25 which connects the lever 18 to the piston rod 23 and projects freely into a slot in the arm 9. Thus, in operation, the rod 23 is moved to rock the lever 18 and raise the lug 11 before the lost-motion is taken up and the disc 4 is rotated until the lug 11 drops in the next slot. The retraction of the piston rod 23 is limited by a set-screw 35, the setting of which can be made by a gauging block 37. The set screw stops the travel of the piston rod 23 just before the lug 11 drops into a notch, the final indexing travel being accomplished by the inertia of the rotating disc 4. In modifications, the lever 12 is movable linearly instead of pivotally, the hydraulic cylinder 28 can be pivotally mounted, or the piston rod 23 may include a joint, or the device 28 may be electromagnetic. The machine may have a milling cutter for cutting bevel gears, the cutter having a gap to allow the indexing movement to take place. |
