[Also in Division Cl] A ,portable apparatus for generator .''of hydrogen by contacting a liquid fuel with a solid metallic catalyst comprises reaction chamber 13 containing the catalyst, valve means 21 for withdrawal of hydrogen, pressurizabIe fuel chamber 25 having inlet means 31, and a conduit extending from the lower portion of reaction chamber 13 to the lower portion of fuel chamber 25 and having cutoff valve 35. In operation, 'valve 35 is opened and liquid fuel which is under pressure in chamber 25 is forced through. passage 33 into the conduit and passes into reaction chamber 13. Alternatively, reaction chamber 13 may initially contain a pressurised solution some of which is forced down the conduit to mix with a solid fuel component in chamber 25 when valve 35 is opened. The catalyst is so arranged in chamber 13 that as the fuel level rises in the chamber, the fuel comes into contact with a greater catalyst surface area. As the hydrogen pressure increases in chamber 13, fuel is forced back into chamlber 25. The rate of generation of hydrogen is thus dete:rmined by the rate of withdrawal of hydrogen through valve 21. The fuel may be an aqueous alkaline solution of sodium or potassium borohydride; the catalyst may be nickel, platinum, iridium, alumina. |
