7-(a- or b -azido acylamino) cephalosporanic acid or a derivative thereof of Formula I wherein R1 is the group or R2 is acetoxy or pyridinium; and M is H, a cation or an anionic charge is prepared by reacting 7-aminocephalosporanic acid or a derivative thereof Formula II wherein R2 and M have the above meanings, with an a - or b -azido carboxylic acid of formula R1-COOH wherein R1 has the above meaning, or a reactive derivative thereof. Typical compounds are 7-(2-azido-octan-amido) cephalosporanic acid, 7 - (2 - azido - isobutanamido) cephalosporanic acid, the sodium salts and the dicyclohexylamine salts. A chemotherapeutic composition comprises a 7 - (a - or b - azido - acylamino) cephalosporanic acid as above and a pharmaceutical carrier.
