Apparatus for drafting and twisting sliver comprises first and second twisting-means with means to prevent the sliver rotating as it passes from the one to the other; the first twisting- means comprises drafting means rotated bodily and a pair of nip rollers to hold the sliver after it leaves the drafting-means, and the second twisting means is such as to increase the degree of twist imparted by the first means. Sliver is drawn out of a can 1, the cover 62 of which carries a frame 6 carrying drafting rollers. The cover and frame are rotated together through a pinion 61 and the rollers are rotated about their axes by worm-gearing 42, 43 driven from a pinion 41 which meshes a fixed pinion 51 as the frame rotates. Above the drafting rollers is a pair of rollers 7 which only rotate about their axes. From the first twisting device so constituted the sliver passes along a path 2 to a second twisting-device comprising a pair of rollers 8 rotating only about their own axes, and a pair of rollers 9 which rotate about an axis 2". These are carried by a housing 13 driven by a pinion 14. The rollers are rotated about their own axes by a pinion 93 driven by the rotation of the housing, the latter also causing a disc 11 with an inclined channel 111 through which the sliver is delivered for collection cycloidally in a can 12. In modifications, (a) already-twisted can be used as the starting- material in can 1 which is, in this case, held stationary so that the sliver is untwisted before drafting; (b) several slivers can be twisted together; these may lie loosely inside can 1 or lie in a number of smaller cans inside rotating can 1 or on a rotating housing, or in separately rotating cans; (c) a number of slivers receiving their first twist in separate first-twist apparatus, can be twisted together in a common second-twist apparatus; (c) the rollers 9 of the second-twist means can be replaced by a twisttube; and (d) the twice-twisted sliver can be collected on a bobbin instead of in the can 12. |
