The present invention relates to a new cytochrome P450 from Rhizopus oryzae and to its use in the biotransformation of steroids. The present invention further relates to methods and materials for the hydroxylation of progesterone, testosterone, 11-deoxycorticosterone, and 11-deoxycortisol. The invention further relates to genes useful in the preparation of recombinant cells capable of biotransformation according to the invention, and to recombinant cells capable of biotransformation of steroids.
