In a packing machine for checking the exact number and density of cigarettes to be packaged an endless conveyer 1 carries a number of boxes 8 which are packed with cigarettes having their ends accessible through open sides of the boxes and has vertically mounted, on opposite sides, a pair of sensing drums 401 which are rotatable in opposite directions tangential to the box sides at the same speed as the conveyer and which carry four sets of spring-loaded, radially slidable, pins 403 which, in each set, are spaced similarly to the cigarettes in the boxes. The pins 403 are able to penetrate a certain depth into the open sides of the boxes in radial alignment with the cigarettes therein. During operation the pins 403 of each drum meet the corresponding cigarette ends which, if present and of the desired density, force the pins 403 back against their springs 405 to be held in their retracted positions by spring tongues 408 which engage behind pin heads 407. If all of the cigarettes in a box are regular in number and density all of the pins 403 will be pushed and held back and none will touch a movable striker plate 413 so that a microswitch 415 will not be actuated. After a set of pins 403 has passed the striker plate 413 a vertically reciprocable slide 409, which carries the series of spring tongues, is moved upward by a circular cam and wheel mechanism 410, 411 to disengage all of the spring tongues from the pin heads 407 so that the pins 403 project outwardly again ready for another sensing operation. If only one cigarette is missing, or has a density below a pre-set minimum, the associated pin 403 continues to protrude so as to hit the striker 413 and actuate the switch 415. The latter acts upon a locking device 416 and prevents the forward movement of a pusher 16 which is adapted to transfer the stacks of cigarettes from the respective boxes into aligned packages. |
