[Also in Division F4] In a process and apparatus for steaming materials which can be stressed in a lengthwise direction, such as a length or web of material, the material is guided, in a contact-free manner, partly around at least one drum, such as a sieve-drum or slatted drum on a cushion of steam. Each sieve-drum may be provided with an axial fan 9, Fig. 2, whose direction of rotation can be reversed so that the drum can function as a blowing sieve-drum or a suction sieve drum. Heaters 10 may be provided. A suitable blowing sieve-drum shown in Fig. 4 has projecting slats 23 mounted on its peripheral, perforated wall. These slats are inclined, so as to direct steam issuing from the perforations in the direction of travel of the web of material 15. The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a heat-insulated housing 1, which is divided, by a partition 2, into a front chamber 3 accommodating two blowing sievedrums 4, and a rear chamber 5 accommodating two suction sieve drums 6. Perforated screens 11 are provided within the housing 1 above and beneath the drums 4 and 6. In each drum 4 is located a concentric, stationary drum 13, whose peripheral wall is perforated in that part adjacent to the peripheral part of the drum 4 covered externally by the material 15. In each drum 6 is mounted a stationary curved baffle 14, which covers the perforations in the peripheral wall of the drum not covered externally by the material 15. A travelling web of material 15 is, for example, impregnated with a solution of an artificial resin or dye in a padder 16, then squeezed between rollers 17 which remove some of the solution, and then passed, through an opening in the front end-wall of the housing and over a polished roller 18 then in a contact-free manner, under the first drum 4 and over the second drum 4, then through an opening in the partition 2, under the first drum 6 and over the second drum 6, and then out of the housing 1, e.g. between rollers in an opening in the rear end-wall of the housing. Means 20 and 21, Fig. 2, for rotatably driving, respectively, the fans 9 and the drums, are externally mounted on opposite side-walls of the housing. Saturated steam is generated in a sump at the base of the housing 1. An adjustable flap 19 may be provided, in the passageway between the top wall of the housing and the upper screen 11, to control the size of another opening in the partition 2 and consequentially the flow of steam between the chambers 3 and 5. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the material passes in a contact-free manner round a blowing roller 22 and then around two blowing drums 4 arranged one above the other. Suction drums 6 and blowing drums 4 may be arranged alternately in one row Fig. 5 (not shown) or staggered in two rows Fig. 6 (not shown).
