The invention relates to an accelerator for accelerating charged particles, having at least two HF resonators (17) arranged consecutively in the beam direction by which a pulse train (13) comprising a plurality of particle bunches (15) can be accelerated and having a control device (21) for actuating the HF resonators (17), wherein the HF fields that can each be generated in the HF resonators (17) are adjustable by the control device (21) independently of one another during acceleration of the pulse train (13) such that the plurality of particle bunches (15) of the pulse train (13) undergo differing acceleration upon acceleration of the pulse train (13). The invention furthermore relates to a method for actuating such an accelerator wherein the HF fields that can each be generated in the HF resonators (17) are adjusted independently of one another during acceleration of the pulse train (13) such that the plurality of particle bunches (15) of the pulse train (13) undergo differing acceleration upon acceleration of the pulse train (13). |
