When the provided home theater device is set to a theater mode, the CPU of the home theater device sends current volume control state data to a digital television receiver. Upon receiving the volume control state data from the home theater device, the CPU of the digital television receiver uses the received volume control state data to update volume control state data stored in memory. The CPU of the digital television receiver determines post-operation volume setting data on the basis of volume change information from a remote control and the volume control state data stored in memory. A CEC command including the determined volume setting data is then sent to the home theater device, and a display unit displays the current volume as a fraction of the maximum value of the range within which the home theater device can adjust the volume.
