The method involves supplying fuel to an anode area (3) of a fuel cell (2), and supplying an oxidant to a cathode area (4) of the fuel cell. Anode exhaust gas is recirculated by a recirculation line from an anode output to an anode input. A valve device (14) is operated in an opened condition when mass flow of the oxidant exceeds a preset value and pressure within an anode area of the valve device is larger or equal to the pressure in a cathode area of the valve device.
