PURPOSE: A pharmaceutical composition containing 5-hydroxy methyl-2-furfural is provided to remove free radical in vitro and reactive oxygen species. CONSTITUTION: A 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural compound with an antioxidation activity is denoted by chemical formula 1. The compound of chemical formula 1 is isolated from Lurencia undulate. A pharmaceutical composition for antioxidation contains 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural as an active ingredient. The pharmaceutical composition further contains a carrier, excipient, and diluent.
