An automatic meter reading (AMR) system for collection of meter data through a wide area network (21) from a receiver (15) communicating in a local network (17) with meter reading devices (12, 14) in a geographic area based on receiving data through the wide area network at a web site (10) from the receiver that includes meter data from the meter reading devices having previously communicated with the receiver, storing the meter data at the web site, accessing the meter data at the web site using a wireless communication device (28) via a cellular network (20), and displaying the meter data on a display portion of the wireless communication device.
