PURPOSE: A paper sheet pickup device is provided to prevent the interruption of paper feeding and ensure stable, high-speed discharge of paper sheets. CONSTITUTION: A paper sheet pickup device comprises an input unit(51), a feed mechanism(2), a pick-up mechanism(56), a transfer mechanism(58), a thickness detector(120), a paper sheet sensor(122), and a control unit. The input unit loads and supports a plurality of paper sheets(P). The feed mechanism supplies the paper sheets to a pick up position(87) on the input unit. The pick-up mechanism picks up the paper sheets at the pick up position one by one. The transfer mechanism transfers the picked up paper sheets along a transfer path. The thickness detector detects the thickness of the picked up paper sheets. The paper sheet sensor detects the density of the picked up paper sheets at the upstream side of the pick up position. The control unit determines the feed speed or amount of the paper sheets by the transfer mechanism according to the thickness per unit time obtained by the thickness detector.
