The method involves identifying a difference (D) between a signature acquired using a digital camera and a reference signature (SREF). A mark is associated with the identified difference found in an area (41) of the mark among a set of marks (40) distributed in the reference signature. A decision is made that the difference between the acquired signature and the reference signature is considered based on comparison of the signatures in the area. The identification result and the decision result are combined for determining the presence of an obstacle on a path of an opening frame. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting an obstacle on a path of an opening frame of a motor vehicle when the opening frame is moved from an opening position to a closing position of an opening.
