The device (10) has a strap (15) cooperating with a seat (16). A protection unit (17) of the strap is mounted on projecting parts of a body shell (11) of a motor vehicle (12), and serves as a deviator unit for moving the strap from the projecting parts during unwinding of the strap. The deviator unit has clipping lugs placed on a belt return element (21), where the deviator unit is a plastic piece or a metallic wire. The deviator unit has an assembling element i.e. fixing pin, inserted in the body shell.
