PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display element, in which the intrusion of water into the liquid crystal display element from the outside is blocked. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element, in which the polarization state of incident light is modulated and emitted to display image information, is manufactured by placing two substrate units, each of which is prepared by arranging a metal mirror electrode, a liquid crystal alignment film and a liquid-repellent surface-treated coating on the surface of a plate-like substrate in this order from the substrate side, while interposing a spacer material between them to form a gap between two substrate units and bonding the outer peripheral parts of two substrate units to each other by using an adhesive material so that the formed gap is filled with a liquid crystal to form the cell space. The method for manufacturing the liquid crystal display element includes: a liquid-repellent property diminishing step of diminishing a liquid-repellent property of the liquid-repellent surface-treated coating, which is formed on the surface of the liquid crystal alignment film, in an adhesive material-filled area by a surface modification means; and a bonding step of bonding two substrate units to each other by the adhesive material after the liquid-repellent property diminishing step is carried out.
