PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp obtaining a higher illuminance maintenance rate while obtaining a brightness equivalent to that of the conventional discharge lamp. SOLUTION: In a short arc discharge lamp including an anode and a cathode opposed to each other in an arc tube and generating an arc by applying a voltage between the anode and the cathode, the anode is formed with a recess in a shape of a spherical surface on the centerline of the anode on a tip face of the anode, and characterized by satisfying 0.45≤D1/D0≤1.15, where D0 is a diameter of the arc formed between the anode and the cathode and D1 is a diameter of the recess.
