PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochemical capacitor that has excellent energy density and improves the charging and discharging cycle durability. SOLUTION: The electrochemical capacitor includes: a positive electrode 2 that includes a positive-electrode-side coating layer 9a containing a polarizable carbon material; a negative electrode 3 that includes a negative-electrode-side coating layer 9b, containing a material that reversibly stores/discharges lithium ions and is disposed so that the negative-electrode-side coating layer 9b faces the positive-electrode side coating layer 9a; and an electrolyte 6 containing an organic solvent, including lithium salts and making the positive electrode and the negative electrode 3 immerse. The concentration of lithium salts in the electrolyte 6 is set to 1.5 mol/L or less, and final current in charging, including a precycle, is set to less than 0.2 mA/cm<SP>2</SP>.
