PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To take over an application using a boot disk when a server to be booted by use of an external disk device fails, without selecting a destination server from a system having non-uniform hardware configuration. SOLUTION: A computer system includes a plurality of servers 102 connected to the external disk device on a network. The server boots an operation system from the external disk device 131. The computer system detects a failure in an active server, when taking over an application in the computer system to the server not in operation, when the failure occurs in the active server in operation. The computer system retrieves a server not in operation having the same hardware configuration as the active server in the computer system, accesses the external disk device from the server retrieved, and takes over the application, by booting the server from the external disk device.
