PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control rod handling method which can shorten a time required for connecting control rods and a control rod drive mechanism (CRD). SOLUTION: The control rods 11 gripped by hooks 49 of grippers 48 are lowered and seated on upper ends of hollow pistons 16 of the CRD in a full withdrawal state, and the hooks 49 are inserted into openings 37 of handles 36 of the control rods 11 (a). The hooks 49 are lifted and made to contact with the handles 36 (b). The control rods 11 are rotated by gripper slewing gears 43 (c). There arises a state that interstices formed between respective engaging convexes in coupling sockets 27 of the control rods 11 are located immediately above convexes of coupling spuds of the hollow pistons 16 (d). On this occasion, the control rods 11 are descended by their own weight and the convexes of the coupling spuds pass in the interstices. Gripper moving apparatuses 52 suppress descending speeds of the control rods 11 (e). The control rods 11 is turned by angles of 90°, and the control rods 11 and the CRD 15 (f) are connected.
