PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid discharge device which permits the volatilization of a solvent of a liquid from nozzles to be effectively restrained in a simpler mechanism. SOLUTION: The liquid discharge device includes a wiping mechanism having a wiper blade 53 as an application means to apply a protective liquid as a protective agent for preventing the liquid from penetrating on the nozzle forming face of a recording head. The wiper blade applies the protective liquid to the nozzle forming face when it shifts to a nondischarge condition where it does not discharge ink from the nozzles 37, and seals the openings of the nozzles by the protective film composed of the protective liquid.
