PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve usability of an image forming apparatus, by always preventing displacement by varying a detection range of patterns for correcting displacement and thereby reducing failures to correct displacement caused by inability of detecting patterns for correcting displacement. SOLUTION: On an endless conveying means for conveying recording mediums on which images of a plurality of colors are superimposed and transferred, a plurality of sets of patterns for correcting displacement, in which a plurality of columns of patters comprising a plurality of line segments of at least two colors or more are used as one set, are prepared (S101). In the case of failure of positional detection in previously correcting displacement (S103), a plurality of detection ranges are set, and sections, which are not detected, are set over the detection ranges, to perform positional detection (S105). Then, the positional information of the patterns for correcting displacement is detected (S106) and saved, displacement calculation is performed on the basis of the saved positional information (S107).
