PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for thermally cracking heavy oil, at a low cost without installation of a new heater etc., capable of operating a thermal cracking apparatus continuously and stably over a long period of time with suppressing caulking in a heating furnace tube. SOLUTION: This method for thermally cracking heavy oil discloses thermal cracking of raw heavy oil, which includes ≥80 wt.% of an aromatic content, ≥25 wt.% of a polycyclic aromatic content of tricycle or more and 2-20% of an asphaltene content, at a temperature of 400-600°C and a pressure of 0.01-1.0 MPa.
