<p>preparation of 2-(aminophenyl)-4(5)-nitroimidazoles by reduction of the corresponding 2-(nitrophenyl)-4(5)nitroimidazoles. The compounds are important intermediates for the manufacture of 2-halogenphenyl-5-nitroimidazoles which have antiparasitic activity, and the method gives an improved method of preparation leading to a more economic process. The 2-nitrophenyl group is selectively reduced to a 2-aminophenyl group in an aqueous solution in the presence of at least 5 mol. ammonia, at a pH above 8, and at a temperature below 50 deg.C, using at least one mol of an aqueous solution of ammonium sulphide.</p> |
