Cryopreservation method (M1) comprising applying samples to a storage substrate and storing position-specific data characterizing each sample on the substrate, is new. Independent claims are included for: (1) a substrate, e.g. a CD (100) or integrated circuit, for cryopreservation of samples with a base (110) which has bores (11) into which the bases (121) of sample carriers (120) fit and which has a coating (122) into which information can be written; and (2) a method for operating a cryobank using the method described above.
