1,217,123. Friction Clutches. TWIN DISC Inc. 16 Jan., 1969 [19 Jan., 1968], No. 2606/69. Heading F2C. In an hydraulically operated multi-plate friction clutch wherein initial rapid clutch engagement is produced by pressure liquid supplied to a radially inner chamber 30 and thereafter full clutch engagement is produced by pressure build-up in a radially outer chamber 31 fed from the inner chamber 30 through an orifice 32, the engaging piston 10 carries an exhaust valve 40 which is closed when the pressure in the inner chamber 30 reaches a predetermined value. During initial clutch engagement the valve 40 permits air to flow into the outer chamber 31 through ducts 42, 47 and the air trapped in the outer chamber 31 when the valve 40 closes cushions clutch engagement. When the pressure supply to the inner chamber 30 is cut off for clutch disengagement the valve 40 opens to rapidly exhaust the outer chamber 31. The friction discs 8, 9 are separated by springs 48 during clutch disengagement. As shown in a double clutch a valve 24 transfers the exhaust fluid from the clutch being disengaged to the plates of the other clutch for cooling purposes. |
