PURPOSE: An apparatus for reducing the channel play time in a portable terminal and a method thereof are provided to reduce the channel display delay time by previously storing a traffic key. CONSTITUTION: A control unit receives and stores a traffic key corresponding to an encrypted channel. When entering the encrypted channel, the corresponding channel is deciphered and reproduced using the stored traffic key(316). A traffic key is previously received before streaming the encrypted channel. The play delay generating in receiving the encrypted channel stream corresponding to the traffic key is reduced.
