Novel compounds of general formula and acid addition and quaternary salts thereof wherein R is H or an alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical all of which may be substituted or is R 2 CO where R 2 is alkoxy, alkenyloxy, benzyloxy optionally substituted, phenoxy optionally substituted, alkyl or aralkyl optionally substituted, aryl optionally substituted, heterocyclic or -NR 3 R 4 where R 3 and R 4 are each H, C 1-6 alkyl or C 2-6 alkenyl are prepared by one of the following methods; (a) a compound of formula wherein Y is halogen or sulphonyloxy is reacted with a piperazine of formula or (b) a compound of formula is reacted with a compound of formula wherein X is halogen, OH, alkoxy or azide, or (c) the xanthyl piperazinyl ketone is reacted with the compound of formula in all cases optionally followed by salt formation. 1 - (Xanthene - 91 - carbonyl) - 4 - (# - chloroethyl)-piperazine is prepared by action of xanthene-9<SP>1</SP>-carboxylic acid chloride on N- (#-hydroxyethyl)-piperazine, followed by action of thionyl chloride on the resulting 1- (xanthene - 9<SP>1</SP>- carbonyl) - 4 - (# - hydroxyethyl)- piperazine. |
