PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method that suppresses formation of by-products and efficiently produces inositol. SOLUTION: The method for producing inositol using methanol as a raw material includes mutating methanol assimilating yeast so as to overexpress an inositol-3-phosphate synthetase gene to give mutated yeast, culturing the mutated yeast in the presence of methanol, and collecting inositol from the culture.
