The present invention relates to a method and a system for refunding taxes to foreign tourists. The method comprises the steps of: making information on a credit card purchase of merchandise by a foreign customer at a duty-free shop available to a tax refund center subsequent to the purchase; requesting authorization from the customer's international credit card company and processing the refund with the tax refund center; making details on the customer's credit card usage and tax refund available to the tax refund center's database for archiving; requesting approval from the credit card issuer for the international credit card company's processing of the tax refund; and requesting the credit card issuer to charge the appropriate amount for the transaction in consideration of the tax refund.
