PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for detecting deterioration of a lightning arrester capable of detecting accurately a deterioration state of the zinc oxide type lightning arrester both in a hot-line state and in a stop-line state, and having excellent workability or economical efficiency. SOLUTION: This apparatus for detecting deterioration of a lightning arrester includes: a high-frequency power supply 8; a pair of detecting terminals 12 connected to the high-frequency power supply 8 via a resistance 13 for measurement and touched to the terminals of the lightning arrester 3; a voltage detection circuit for obtaining a terminal voltage of the resistance 13 for measurement when the detecting terminals 12 touch the terminals of the lightning arrester 3; and a determination circuit for comparing the voltage with a reference value to determine whether the detected voltage is good or bad. A voltage having a frequency sufficiently higher than the operation frequency of a power line is generated by the high-frequency power supply 8 and applied to the lightning arrester 3, and change in electrical characteristics due to deterioration of zinc oxide elements is detected as change in current including capacitive current, and then it is determined whether the detected change is good or bad.
