PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient method for a remote station having a plurality of radio access media to preferentially detect and select a wireless local area network (WLAN) service. SOLUTION: An MS first wakes for a mobile paging indicator (step 354). The MS determines whether to schedule waking so as to match with a common time for a first paging indicator slot and a WLAN beacon and determines when to wake by using several criteria. The MS determines whether to perform positive WLAN scanning or passive WLAN scanning (determination unit 356). For positive scanning, the MS thereafter sends a request for the WLAN beacon (step 358) and continue to scan for the WLAN beacon (step 360).
