PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus capable of improving precision of a background luminance detection value in a top end portion of a document and removing a background equivalent to an intermediate portion of the document. SOLUTION: When an instruction to read images on a surface of a document is received, images within a predetermined range on the rear side of the document are read by a reading unit 106 for reading images on the rear side of the document and a background luminance on the rear side of the document read by the reading unit 106 is detected. Images on a front side of the document are read by a reading unit 114 disposed at a position different from that of the reading unit 106, and while using the detected background luminance, background luminance on the front side of the read document is detected.
