PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner, performing optical scanning with high accuracy without causing any increase in cost. SOLUTION: Each liquid crystal element includes one effective area, and deflects incident light beam in a plane orthogonal to the main-scanning direction according to V1 (a first effective voltage) and V2 (a second effective voltage) applied to the effective area. A scanning control device sets the V1 and V2 so that an extremal value number of a phase difference distribution curve in the effective area is 1 according to a detected shift amountΔz of a scanning line. In this case, even when the scanning line position in the surface of a photoreceptor drum is moved by the liquid crystal element, a sub-scanning beam waist position can be restrained from changing largely.
