摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fine carbon fiber and a fine short carbon fiber of high purity which contain slight amount of metallic impurities, are capable of improving dispersibility and kneadability of a polymer and powder in converting them into a composite and of giving excellent moldability to the composite, and have excellent capability of allowing the composite to exhibit its functions of electroconductivity, thermal conductivity, slidability, reinforcement, or the oike. SOLUTION: The fine carbon fiber and the fine short carbon fiber produced by a gas phase growth method and slightly containing ash components each constituted of a plurality of aggregate bodies linking together in a head-to-tail form, with the aggregate body formed of 2 to 30 structural units of a temple-bell shape piled up one after another sharing the axis thereof, which structural unit of a temple-bell shape includes a closed head part and a trunk part opening at the bottom thereof formed of a graphite net face consisting of elemental carbon alone, with the generating line of the trunk part and the fiber axis forming an angleθof smaller than 15°, has a specific representative conversion length of the fiber in terms of a particle diameter measured by a dynamic light scattering method.
