<p>The device has a breathing gas delivery unit (6) arranged in a breathing circuit (1) downstream of a breathing gas reservoir (9) in a direction of flow of a breathing gas, and an air inlet (11) introducing ambient air into the breathing circuit. The air inlet is arranged between a positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) valve (10) and the breathing gas delivery unit. A control unit controls the ambient air entering the air inlet and controls the breathing gas delivery unit, the PEEP valve and a breathing gas outlet valve (8) for removing breathing gases from the breathing circuit.
