A cable reel comprises a hub 4 for carrying an electrical cable (6 fig. 2) to be wound and unwound on the hub 4 by winding a handle 8, the cable reel having a first side or flange 10 which rotates with the hub 4 and which is located at a first end 12 of the hub 4, a second side (14 fig. 4) which does not rotate with the hub 4 and which may include a support member 58 having a formation 60 for rotatably receiving the hub 4 and a cable-protecting arrangement 16 which rotates with the hub 4 and which is located at a second end 18 of the hub 4, such that the cable-protecting arrangement 16 maintains the cable (6 fig. 2) out of contact with the second side (14 fig. 4) of the cable reel as the cable (6 fig. 2) is wound and unwound on the hub 4. The cable-protecting arrangement 16 may be a flange or an apertured arrangement which may be in the shape of a spider's web and which may include a plurality of friction reducing members or lugs projecting from the cable-protecting arrangement or flange 16 adjacent the inner surface (20 fig. 7) of the second side (14 fig. 4) of the cable reel. The second side (14 fig. 4) may form part of a circular housing and the cable (6 fig. 2) may pass through a slot (26 fig. 1) in that circular housing. The cable reel may include a cable guide in the form of guide wings (30, 32 fig. 1) adjacent the winding handle 8 and a carrying handle (44 fig. 4) recessed in a side of the cable reel. A plurality of apertures or sockets (52 fig.1) for electrical plugs may be provided on the first side 10.
