Foamable coloured styrene polymers are produced by a free radical initiated polymerization of styrene in an aq. suspension in the presence of one or more blowing agents and one or more dyestuffs of general formulµ where R 1 is a C 1-25 alkyl or cycloalkyl radical or -(CH 2 ) n OR 1 , where n is 2-10 and R1 1 is a C 1-10 alkyl radical, R 2 and R 3 are H, a C 1-12 alkyl radical, a C 1-10 alkoxy or aryloxy radical, a nitro group or a halogen atom and R 4 is H, a C 1-12 alkyl or a C 1-25 alkoxy or aryl radical or a halogen atom. In examples the styrene, with optionally α-methyl styrene, was polymerized in an aq. suspension containing polyvinyl alcohol, the dye and benzoyl peroxide, pentane with optionally iso-pentane, or hexane, or CCl 3 F was added during polymerization: the dyes used were of formulµ
