The parent Specification describes and claims macrocyclic polyethers containing at least 12 atoms in the polyether ring of which at least 4 are oxygen atoms and in which (a) each oxygen atom of the polyether ring is bonded only to carbon atoms and is separated from the next oxygen atom by 2 to 10 carbon atoms, (b) at least one pair of vicinal carbon atoms of the polyether ring is fused to an aromatic ring, and (c) each of the vicinal carbon atoms fused to the aromatic ring is bonded to an oxygen atom of the polyether ring. This invention is now modified in that, in so far as polyethers containing at least 14 atoms in the polyether ring and in which the oxygen atoms are separated by 2 or 3 carbon atoms are concerned, the vicinal carbon atoms mentioned above are fused to a fully saturated alicyclic ring instead of to an aromatic ring. The compounds may be prepared as described in the parent Specification, followed by catalytic hydrogenation to convert the aromatic ring into an alicyclic ring. Some of the examples describe the hydrogenation of products specified in the parent Specification. Others describe the preparation of products covered by the parent Specification but not exemplified therein, and the subsequent hydrogenation of these products. Like the products of the parent Specification, the products of the invention form complexes with compatible cations, and methods for preparing such complexes, and for utilizing the complex-forming property, are described, these methods being generally similar to those described in the parent Specification. The last two examples describe the preparation of complexes from certain products of the invention and potassium hydroxide, potassium iodide, potassium tri-iodide, ammonium thiocyanate and barium thiocyanate. |
