PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tail end detecting method of a recording medium capable of using the recording medium up to a tail end by easily detecting the tail end by an optical method without leaving a pressing trace in the recording medium, and to provide the roll-shaped recording medium used for the tail end detecting method for winding it on a core by connecting a sheet-like substance to a winding start part of a recording medium portion. SOLUTION: The tail end detecting method of the roll-shaped recording medium detects the tail end of the recording medium portion by a difference in its reflected light quantity by receiving reflecting light by irradiating light to a surface having a porous ink receiving layer of the roll-shaped recording medium including the recording medium portion and the sheet-like substance. The roll-shaped recording medium includes the recording medium portion having a core, a support and the porous ink receiving layer on at least one surface of the support and the sheet-like substance connected to the winding start part of the recording medium portion where the reflectance of the sheet-like substance is 70% or lower or 130% or higher assuming the reflectance of the recording medium portion as 100%.
