<p>1284073 Photographic type-composing INTERNATIONAL PHOTON CORP 22 Aug 1969 [4 Sept 1968] 42117/68 Heading B6W Two continuously rotatable matrix discs 10, 12, Figs. 1 and 3, are mounted with the character or emulsion side 118, 116 on the right and are selectively illuminated by flash tubes 18 (120), 20 (122), the character-forming light beams 60, 62 being deflected into a common path 70 by two prisms 30, 32 having an odd and even number respectively of reflecting surfaces and a half-reflecting common face 84. Each disc carries a plurality of concentric character arrays 110, 112, 114, Fig. 2, and can be moved about an axis 48 by a cam 56 to bring the desired array into the path of the light from the flash tubes. Timing slits 92 in the discs cooperate with photo-electric cells 78. The optical system comprises a two-position afocal magnifier 86, an imaging lens 88 to produce an intermediate image at 90, a plurality of size-change lenses 100, 102, 104 on a movable turret 92, and character image spacing means comprising a lens 94 and a mirror 96 for directing the light on to a film 98. Coarse spacing adjustment is controlled by the system 94, 96, fine adjustment by the lens 88 and very fine adjustment by varying the timing of the flash.</p> |
