RESTRAINT IN VEST

An apparatus for helping to protect an occupant (12) of a vehicle includes a vest(20) and a restraint (50) incorporated into the vest (20). The vest (20) includes a front panel (22), a back panel (24), and left and right shoulder portions (26, 28) extending between the front panel (22) and the back panel (24). The vest (20) has an inner face and an outer face. The restraint (50) includes a front latch (52) fixed to the vest front panel (22) and a back latch fixed to the vest back panel (24). The restraint (50) includes webbing portions extending in a force-transmitting relationship between the front latch (52) and the back latch (54), within the front panel (22) and the shoulder portions (26, 28) and the back panel(24) of the vest(20), so as to extend at least partially around the torso of a occupant (12) wearing the vest (20). The front panel (22) of the vest (20) includes a front armor pocket (34) and the back panel (24) of the vest (20) includes a back armor pocket, for receiving and supporting panels (40, 42) of body armor.
