PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of quickly performing a reading operation of an original and also correctly reading the second and succeeding sheets of the original in the case of continuously reading two or more sheets of the original. SOLUTION: When the original reading operation of the first sheet of the original is started, a position of a boundary BD separated from an original reading start position RP only by a predetermined distance LB is detected, and an image sensor 14 is moved to the original reading start position RP to read an image of the original. After that, the image sensor 14 is positioned at the position of the boundary BD, and when the second and succeeding sheets of the original are read, the image sensor 14 is moved to the original reading start position RP, and when the second and succeeding sheets of the original are not read, the image sensor 14 is moved to a waiting position WP.
