Disclosed are a display device and a method for controlling the same, said display device combining detection of movement of the user with detection of the face of the user to thereby be capable of precisely and effectively executing control for conserving power. The display device is provided with: an image capture unit which captures a moving image within a specified range corresponding to an image display direction; a moving object detection unit which detects whether or not there is a moving object within the specified range corresponding to the image display direction; an image analysis unit which analyzes the moving image captured by the image capture unit and detects whether or not there is a face; a power control unit which controls power consumption according to a pattern that is different depending on the mode among a plurality of modes set by the presence or absence of a face detected by the image analysis unit and the presence or absence of a moving object detected by the detection unit.
