PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a broadcast receiver shortening a standby time after being started while suppressing power consumption in standby mode even installed with a component which needs a long starting time, and a method of starting the same. SOLUTION: With a power supply plug 75 connected to a commercial power supply, the broadcast receiver normally detects approach of a person by a human detection sensor 40 and a sub CPU 60 which are powered on, and controls supply of power from a main power supply unit supplying power to individual parts of the receiver. Before start of the receiver with a main switch 22 or a remote controller 30, a component (image processor 200) which includes an OS-installed CPU, digital LSI or the like and takes time for starting is started to stand by beforehand, so that the standby time after start of the receiver is shortened while suppressing power consumption in standby mode.
